CLEVELAND (WJW) – Officials confirm to the FOX 8 I-Team the mayor of Cleveland was headed to city hall last week when his driver activated the lights and sirens moments before a crash. Mayor Justin Bibb has also commented on the crash now for the first time.
The crash happened last Thursday around 9 a.m. near E. 12thStreet and Superior Avenue.
Cleveland police are continuing to investigate why Mayor Justin Bibb’s driver activated the lights and sirensmoments before the crash.
Surveillance video near the scene of the crash showed Bibb’s SUV being hit on the passenger’s side by a vehicle coming through the intersection moments later.
Preliminary information from the department “indicates the lights were activated outside of the emergency response policy,” according to a press release from Cleveland police.
Discipline for this type of violation ranges from a verbal warning to a 3-day suspension, according to Cleveland Police Chief Annie Todd. There’s no word on why the mayor’s vehicle had its lights activated, and police say it could take 2 to 3 more weeks before the investigation is completed.
Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb for the first time released a statement on the crash Tuesday.
“I want to make it clear that nobody is above the law, and I take full responsibility for the actions of my staff. The officer on my security detail exhibited bad judgement in the moment, and his actions are not something I condone. I apologize for the inconvenience or harm caused, and I will ensure the appropriate measures are taken to prevent such an incident in the future.”
The driver, who is also a police officer, remains on the job while the investigation takes place.
