Stephen Hawking Believes in Alien Planet Jackers, More Doomy Dooms of Doom

We find it curious that when scientist Albert Harrison says a visiting alien race may be as petty as humans back in January 2010, no one bats an eyelash.

Stephen Hawking says the same thing and accompanies the statement with ILM level visual effects and time on the Discovery Channel, everyone won’t shut up about humanity’s doom.

NASA Addresses 2012 Doomsayers, Attacks Insanity with Facts

Posted by mistergroonk in Science, The Future on November 11, 2009

Just a quick post for today. NASA has had enough of this 2012 doom nonsense and seeks to set the record straight.

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?
A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then — just as your calendar begins again on January 1 — another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

More sane, rational facts can be found at: 2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won’t End?

Even with NASA’s valiant efforts to calm the nutters of the Internets, all we foresee is 3 more years of SyFy and History Channel milking people’s fears with Doomy Dooms of Doom programs. Don’t get us started on John Cusack’s(and many others) bank account padding role in the upcoming Emmerich flick.

Just don’t.

Texas Fireball Explained: and the World “Exploded in Green!”

Posted by mistergroonk in Science, Space on February 16, 2009

In an effort to recapture my fascination with the Internet, I denied myself the pleasures of Twitter(for the most part) and endeavored to finish other things that needed doing. Things like sunshine and disarming traps making the apartment, once again, guest receivable. As Twitter more addictive than a line of strippers or bags of cocaine dancing around poles, I lurked outside the great internet social party. That’s when I learned of the fireball over Texas.

What you just saw was not satellite debris. The high speed of the fireball in the News 8 video is typical of a natural meteoroid hitting Earth’s atmosphere at tens of km/s. Orbital debris, on the other hand, should crawl across the sky at a fraction of that speed. Astronomer Bill Cooke of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office has reviewed the video and confirms “it’s a natural meteor, definitely.” According to his analysis, the source of the fireball was a meter-class asteroid traveling at about 20 km/s.

Fireball mania started on Friday the 13th, around 10 p.m. EST, when people in central Kentucky heard loud booms, felt their houses shake, and saw a fireball streaking through the sky: reports. “The world appeared to explode–in green!” said one eyewitness. Once again, this appears to be a natural event caused by a meteoroid. Iridium 33 and Kosmos 2251 collided at a speed of about 10 km/s or 22,000 mph. None of the surviving fragments should have been big enough to shake houses in Kentucky. Furthermore, US Space Command, which monitors objects in Earth orbit, has not announced a reentry over Kentucky on Feb. 13th.

One day, SpaceWeather.com, you will learn of permalinks. On that day, I shall welcome you into post 1990s internet society.

If 2 Satellites Collide over Siberia and No One’s there to Freak Out…

Posted by mistergroonk in Space, Technology, Versus on February 13, 2009

…does it make the situation less or more doomed?

As some have already humored, two satellites met a fiery doom in an unplanned collision above northern Siberia.

On February 10 at approximately 1656 GMT, the Iridium 33 and Cosmos 2251 communications satellites collided over northern Siberia. The impact between the Iridium Satellite LLC-owned satellite and the 16-year-old satellite launched by the Russian government occurred at a closing speed of well over 15,000 mph at approximately 490 miles above the face of the Earth.

Local tweet friend, Frank Snyder, has access to many high-resolution images and video of the event. Having watched the videos, trust us when we say you want to download them.
