Former San Pasqual star going national (2024)

Kelsey Harbin graduates from Stanford in June with a degree in human biology.

Then the former San Pasqual High star will move to Lancaster, Pa., where she’ll try and uphold the honor of West Coast field hockey.

A two-time collegiate All-American and two-time NorPac Player of the Year for the Cardinal, Harbin is the only person west of Pennslyvania on the U.S. National Team.

The 30-person team is composed of 16 women from the land of the Steelers and five from New Jersey.

“Playing on the National Team is a dream come true,” said Harbin. “But it means a move.

“As soon as I graduate, I’m on my way. Until then, it’s training and weight work.

“I was blown away with the level of play and the pace of the game at the national level.

“The U.S. is one of the most-fit teams in the world. Our girls are bigger, stronger and faster.

“I think I have the skills to keep up. I know I can make an impact.”

Harbin, a defender, was a key member of the best team in Stanford history.

The Cardinal finished 19-3, a record for wins in a season, won a school-record 12 games in a row, and beat Louisville 3-1 in the NCAA Tournament, the school’s first NCAA Tournament win.

Stanford, ranked No. 8 in the country, lost to No. 3 UConn in the next round.

Harbin was part of a defense that limited opponents to one goal or fewer in 20 of 23 matches.

She finished the season with two goals and six assists as the Cardinal outscored their opponents 53-15.

“I almost went to Northwestern, but switched to Stanford at the last minute, and I’m glad I did,” Harbin said. “The program here has grown up … new turf field, lockers, lounge and video equipment.”

Field hockey has taken Harbin all across the nation as well as Uruguay, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, England, Germany, Spain, Germany and The Netherlands.

Now she’s ready to live in Pennsylvania.

“I love to compete,” she said. “I was born with a competitive nature. I want to play on the world stage. I want to represent my country in the Olympics.

“I’ll give this opportunity my heart and soul and see if I can get it done.”
