While there’s nothing cuter than a fresh litter of tiny kittens and puppies, the abandoned, dumped, and stray animal population within Rusk County is becoming an overwhelming issue to residents, rescues and the area Animal Center. County Commissioners approval of a spay/neuter program could lead to a decline in the number of unwanted animals. (Amber Lollar/The Henderson News)

Animal loving residents across Rusk County are praising a Commissioners Court decision to approve a county-funded spay or neuter program to help curb the ever-increasing overpopulation of stray cats and dogs.
At the June 10 meeting, Commissioners approved $25,000 worth of funding for the program, which will be spearheaded by the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office, where area residents can apply for a voucher.
Applicants must visit the RCSO for applications bringing proof of residency such as a driver license or utility bill. When applications are accepted and approved, pet owners will have up to 45 days to schedule and complete appointments with any DeHart Veterinary or Animal Protection League location.
The voucher will cover up to $65 towards the spay or neuter of cats and dogs. To take advantage of the approved funding, contact the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office at (903) 657-3581.
With news of the program spreading across social media, Rusk County residents have taken to multiple related posts to congratulate commissioners on their decision and to express interest in utilizing the program.
“THIS IS AWESOME,” said locally renowned cat rescuer, Phil Duncan. “If you have been postponing spay and neuter due to cost, you should seize this opportunity and be part of the solution to cat and dog overpopulation in Rusk county, Texas. Do it now.”
“Thank you for stepping up and helping rescuers that are exhausted and broke,” said Henderson native and outspoken animal lover, Cindy Barton Hooker. “Thank you Rusk County for helping resolve the problem.”
To make appointments with any DeHart Veterinary mobile clinic, visit www.dehartvetservices.com/appointments/. Their mobile units set up in Tatum at Bodacious BBQ, 1630 Hill St., every second Monday, and in Kilgore at Atwoods Ranch and Home Goods, located at 1811 U.S. 259, every second Saturday.
The Animal Protection League mobile clinic is available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Henderson’s Brooks Country Feed Store, located at 2303 Jacksonville Drive, every Wednesday and the first Saturday of each month and at Pretty Little Flowers Nursery in Overton. This location can be accessed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, July 12.
To schedule an appointment with APL visit, www.aplspayneuter.org.
If your pet has had a rabies vaccination within the past year, you will be required to bring a copy of their rabies certificate. If not, APL will give your pet a $12 Rabies vaccination at the time of their surgery. Dogs must be on a leash or in a carrier. Cat must be in a carrier lined with newspaper. All food and water must be withheld past midnight the night before their surgery. If your pet eat or drinks after midnight, they could be declined.
