Minister's Moment: Here am I! Send me. (2)

“Here am I! Send me.” Isaiah 6:8

Back in the day, school teachers would use chalkboards to teach lessons to the children in their classroom. After a while, both the chalkboard and the erasers needed cleaning. The teacher would often let a student handle the duty of cleaning the erasers by beating them on the sidewalk or the playground fence. The time would come for the teacher to delegate this assignment to one of the students, and the teacher would sometimes ask for a volunteer.

Can you see the children reaching their hands into the air as high as possible hoping that the height of the hand along with the grunting noises would grab the attention of the teacher and earn the right to complete the task? Most students naturally have a selfish motive for cleaning the erasers. There might have been, however, a few students who merely wanted to serve the teacher out of their love for the teacher.

When I read about Isaiah’s response to God’s call in Isaiah chapter six, I picture a man, in a manly way of course, jumping up and down with his hand raised to get God’s attention while crying out, “HERE AM I! SEND ME!” Isaiah was given a rare glimpse into the throne room of God Almighty with his glory filling the temple. There were fiery angels, the seraphim, surrounding the throne of God giving praise and glory to God by saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!” The sound that was heard was so loud it shook the posts of the door.

Isaiah was overcome with emotion as he realized how unworthy he was as a sinful man. One of the seraphim took a hot coal from the altar and put it against Isaiah’s lips and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity is taken away, and your sin purged.” After this, Isaiah heard the LORD say, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” In response to the cleansing of his sins and the great gratitude Isaiah had for the LORD, he immediately cried out, “Here am I! Send me.”

When one realizes how guilty he or she is before God for breaking His eternal laws, that one desires to be made right. Jesus shed His blood on the cross and died to pay the penalty for all sin. He rose from the grave on the third day defeating death. Being made right with God is a result of faith in Christ Jesus as Savior and in His promise to save. The natural result of this salvation is a desire to stand up and say, “Here am I! Send me!”

Have you experienced this natural response to being saved by Jesus? Have you said to God Almighty, “Here am I! Send me!”? He wants to use you. Sadly, most people who call themselves Christian are not Christian at all and have not ever said, “Here am I! Send me.” What about you?
