In the ever-evolving landscape of independent schools, where challenges like declining enrollment and escalating costs persist, the 2024 CASE-NAIS Conference served as inspiration, highlighting the indispensable role of development in ensuring the sustainability of our schools. The recurrent theme that resonated throughout the conference was the profound impact of engagement, relationship-building, and community on the success of development programs.

From the enlightening opening keynote by Priya Parker , emphasizing the art of gathering and creating meaningful connections, to the closing keynote by Dr. Kara C. Allen , articulating the "SSBKJ" mantra focused on strength, smart decision-making, bravery, kindness, and justice, the centrality of human connections was unmistakable. The sessions in between further reinforced the idea that thriving independent schools are built on a foundation of genuine relationships and a sense of belonging.

There are three things I am still thinking about:

1) LEADERSHIP: To secure a prosperous future, Heads of Schools and Boards of Trustees, as the stewards of these institutions, must recognize their pivotal role in the success of development programs. The demand for sophisticated collaboration is evident, and leaders must actively engage with development teams to support fundraising strategies and share responsibility for achieving ambitious goals. At the heart of this collaboration is the imperative to build a robust community founded on shared values and a collective vision for the school and the students it serves.

2) PURPOSE: The evolution of development offices over the years reflects an elevated level of professionalism, sophistication, and a heightened emphasis on purposeful philanthropy. To truly thrive, schools must clearly articulate the need for philanthropic support and establish meaningful connections that highlight the impact. Development professionals are urged to invest time in getting to know their donors, building trust, and tailoring their approach to inspire generous contributions. This necessitates the creation of a comprehensive fundraising plan that embraces innovation and leverages technology to scale efforts effectively.

3) RELATIONSHIPS: In reflecting on the insights gleaned from the 2024 CASE-NAIS Conference, it is somewhat poetic that the path forward for independent schools is rooted in what we have intuitively known all along—that there is power in engagement and authentic relationships. Our strength lies in the connections we forge and the communities we build. The conference, with its wealth of insights and strategies, reinforced this as the cornerstone of enduring success. As independent schools navigate the ever-evolving landscape, let this foundational wisdom be their guide.

Thank you to Council for Advancement and Support of Education and National Association of Independent Schools for an excellent conference.

Thanks for these reflections, Cathy. It’s striking how everything you touched on really IS rooted in engagement, not only with external constituencies but also one’s colleagues, especially building bonds with the development team.
